Followers of the Sufi orders organised a festive march in the heart of the capital, Tripoli, on Tuesday, to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.

Participants in the march sang religious songs to the beat of drums, while children carried colored flags and lit incense.

Worshipers were also seen inside the mosque of the Islamic Call Society chanting religious songs with the clergy.

“Good omens for the Government of National Unity, the return of the official celebration of the Prophet’s birthday after an absence of more than a year in the capital, Tripoli,” said Mohamed Al-Boni, head of the celebration committee.

He added, “here is the Sufi Zawiya, and the people of Tripoli are reviving this great occasion as they used to for centuries before extremist ideas entered the Libyan society.”

Followers of the Sufi orders have been subjected to numerous attacks by extremist Islamists, following the rise of extremist currents with the overthrow of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, as Salafis consider many of the practices of Sufism heresy.
