Crowds of migrants gathered outside the UNHCR Community Day Centre (CDC) in Tripoli on Saturday, after the UN agency suspended the centre’s services on Monday due to ‘the security situation.’
Migrant families held signs calling for evacuation flights and international aid, with one injured person seen lying on the floor beside the centre with a drip.
South-Sudanese migrant David Oliver Yasona stated that it was ‘clear’ that the country’s government would not help the migrants, and that the UNHCR would not send aid.
“We need human rights activists to come and bear witness to this crisis that is happening in front of the CDC,” said Yasona.
Yasona went on to call for the resumption of humanitarian evacuation flights, stating that children and pregnant women were being ‘exposed to everything’ due to lack of food and shelter.
On Monday, the UNHCR suspended activities at its Tripoli CDC amid a wave of migrant arrests carried out by police, citing security concerns for staff and migrants at the centre.
Over 5,000 migrants and refugees have reportedly been arrested in the past week, as part of a government crackdown on drug trafficking.

SOT, David Oliver Yasona, Migrant from South Sudan: “I am 24 years old and the reason, I am here is because of the crackdown on our homes. We were in our apartments and government forces came, everyone got arrested and people were kicked out of their apartments.”
SOT, David Oliver Yasona, Migrant from South Sudan: “We have been here in front of the CDC for the last eight days and it is clear that there is no protection from the government side or aid from the UNSCR. That’s why we have been here, kids and children, they are studying, and we need evacuation out of the country, we need protection from the organisation. We need human rights activists to come and bear witness to this crisis that is happening in front of the CDC.”
SOT, David Oliver Yasona, Migrant from South Sudan: “We also call upon the government to resume the humanitarian evacuation flights out of the country. As you can see, kids, children, pregnant women, are struggling. They have been here for over a week without food, water or blankets. They are being exposed to everything, as you can see.”
