Libya: Tripoli residents share views on Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi's candidacy

Residents of the Libyan capital Tripoli shared views on Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi’s candidacy on Sunday, after the Electoral Commission announced it has accepted his application.
“As for Saif’s candidacy for the elections, I consider it a farce and an insult to the Libyan laws and courts, because he was issued judgments in absentia and judgments in international courts,” Ahmed Al-Ghweil, a local resident said.
Abu Bakr Al-Huni, another resident of Tripoli said “as a citizen, I do not accept to go backwards, and I reject the candidacy of any criminal, Saif or others, who participated in shedding the blood of the Libyans, whoever he was.”
“We must not anticipate events, time will reveal the truth, but we hope that everyone participates and at least we have options, and whoever gets the largest number [of votes] is the one who takes the opportunity,” said Nouri al-Mugrab, a Tripoli local.
A statement by the electoral commission said on Sunday “Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi submitted his candidacy for the presidential election to the High National Electoral Commission office in the [southern] city of Sebha, completing the legal justifications.”
Saif al-Islam was sentenced to death in 2015 for his involvement in war crimes in 2011. In 2017, he was pardoned by Parliament; however, the International Criminal Court has charged him with committing crimes against humanity.

SOT, Makram Zureik, local resident (Arabic): “As for Saif’s candidacy, this is a criminal who has a judgment in absentia in the Libyan court, and I do not know really how the Electoral Commission accepted his file and marketed him as a presidential candidate, in addition to the fact that, in my opinion, the problem is not Saif’s candidacy, but rather the law that poses obstacles. The Western region will not accept the participation of those who contributed to the bloodshed by running and participating in any elections. Seif or the criminal Haftar are the same in the eyes of every free person. There is no difference between them. This is my personal opinion and the opinion of anyone with the February 17 revolution.”

SOT, Ahmed al-Ghweil, local resident (Arabic): “With regard to Saif’s candidacy for the elections, I consider it a farce and an insult to Libyan laws and courts, because he was originally issued judgments in absentia and judgments in international courts. Therefore, I find it surprising, when a person applies for a position, he must be free of international and local judgments. Saif has a previous and failed experience and represents an era of the time that passed in Libya, and he will not be the best example to show progress and establish a state and sovereignty in Libya.”

SOT, Abu Bakr al-Huni, local resident (Arabic): “As a citizen, I do not want us to go backwards, and I reject the candidacy of any criminal, Saif or others, who participated in shedding the blood of the Libyans, whoever he was.”

SOT, Nuri al-Majrab, local resident (Arabic): “We must not anticipate events, time will reveal the truth, but we hope that everyone participates and at least we have options, and whoever gets the largest number [of votes] is the one who takes the opportunity and we cannot judge the president before he begins his work at least for a year or a hundred days, as they say, and there will be repeated elections, a president will come and a president will leave, and so on.”

SOT, Muhammad Amin bin Zuqlam, local resident (Arabic): “With regard to the elections, Saif, Sarraj, Maitiq and Haftar, I am against their candidacy. The truth is, I want a new generation in their forties and fifties of 100% Libyan nationals who have no previous history in the country, people with a good level of knowledge and morals.”
