Lion and leopard, rescued by Russian vets, flown to Tanzania

Simba the lion and Eva the leopard, who were rescued by Chelyabinsk vets, flew home to Tanzania on Tuesday, said head of the ‘Save Me’ shelter, Karen Dallakyan.

Simba arrived at the shelter in March 2020. Animal rights activists brought him from Dagestan, where he had come from Sochi, where he was used by local photographers for pictures with tourists. After that Simba weighed 50 kilograms and was unable to walk.

“I remember very well all these terrible photos, where his legs were broken, worms were already on him; they were eating his body from the inside and from the outside. The doctor removed about five or six kilos of stones from his stomach or pancreas. He was really in hell. We got him out of there,” said David Dallakyan, volunteer at the ‘Save Me’ wildlife shelter.

A three-day-old leopard kitten, Eva, was brought to the ‘Save Me’ shelter from a mobile zoo, where the kitten was almost killed by her mother. The shelter staff bought the cub and fed it.

The feral cats were ready to be adopted by the Tanzanian Centre for Rescue, Education and Wildlife in 2020, but the pandemic got in the way.

This year, animal rights activists deployed a special operation to ensure that the animals spent the 11-hour flight in comfortable conditions.

In Tanzania, animals will be held in huge aviaries.

“We have two huge aviaries built. We have a special pool for Simba and Eva where they can bathe, we have special platforms for them to climb on,” said Aleksandr Andreychuk, director of the rehabilitation centre in Tanzania.

There are four seasons in Chelyabinsk and all of them are different especially cold ones, we all know it very well. We’ve been artificially heating [the cages] all these months so that the temperature is 25-28 degrees Celsius.”

SOT, Ricard Martinaitis, KlasJet air company’s head of security (Russian): “Certainly, all institutions in our company are the most important protection. The safety of the people, the passengers. Naturally, there is a significant threat during the flight. However, we analysed all these risks, we did a lot of homework getting information from the customer. We gave that information to the local authorities of the Republic of Lithuania to get special permission to transport animals in the cabin with other passengers. This is possible. It takes a little time to prepare it all, but, as they say, it’s done.”

SOT, Karen Dallakyan, Founder of ‘Save Me’ wildlife shelter (Russian): “Our animals have to eat the meat they ate here for the first week. We bring meat from here, it has to be from a shop, with all the stamps, receipts, because we go through customs, it’s very important.”

These manipulations are very important because today we will also be demobilising these animals before we get on the plane. Therefore, these procedures have all been done. They do not understand why they have not eaten for 24 hours. Because it’s breakfast time, dinner time - all the other animals in the shelter are being fed. And a meat cart walks past them and doesn’t feed them. Well, we’ll have to be patient, because it’s done for them”.

We have a special pool for Simba and Eva where they can bathe, we have special platforms for them to climb on. There are rooms where they will be quarantined for the first time. So it’s a big system with a double entrance, and an electric fence. Everything to ensure a comfortable and safe life for the animals in Tanzania.”
