A building in Vilnius, which in 2005-2006 allegedly housed a secret Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) prison dubbed ‘Site Violet’, is being prepared to be put up for sale.
Footage filmed on Tuesday, January 11, shows the two-story brick building surrounded by a fence and tall trees.
Political analyst Algirdas Paleckis told Ruptly that in 2003 the CIA asked the Lithuanian authorities for permission to establish a prison in the country.
“At that time, Lithuania was only a candidate for NATO membership, and therefore our political leadership and the leadership of the special services agreed with pleasure that this prison should be here. As if it would be an argument for Lithuania to be accepted into NATO as soon as possible. And so it happened - in 2004 Lithuania became a member of this organisation”, he explained.
At the moment, the presence of the only prisoner in Site Violet, the Palestinian Abu Zubaydah, has been proven, but the political scientist suggests that there were more of them.
The United States suspected Zubaydah of working for Al-Qaeda and helping to plan the September 11 attacks. He is still imprisoned in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
“A couple of years ago, he [Zubaydah] won the European Court of Human Rights and the Lithuanian government a couple of days ago was now forced to pay this Palestinian 100,000 euros in fines…Because here, in this building, the European Court of Human Rights proved that this Palestinian got cruel treatment, there were tortures”, - Paleckis said.
According to local media, citing the Lithuanian Ministry of Justice, on January 4, the agency confirmed that Zubaydah had received the compensation.
Paleckis added that the Lithuanians intent was to get the US authorities to call the names of American and Lithuanian agents “who staged this bacchanalia here with the torturing of people.”
Lithuanian media claims that the country authorities don’t admit the functioning of the CIA prison ‘Site Violet’.

SOT, Algirdas Paleckis, political analyst (Russian): “From 2005 to 2006 there was a real secret CIA prison on the territory of Lithuania, which is now a NATO member. It so happened that in 2003 there was a request from the CIA to the Lithuanian authorities about whether or not they would allow the establishment of such a prison. At that time, Lithuania was only a candidate for NATO membership, and therefore our political leadership and the leadership of the special services agreed with pleasure that this prison should be here. As if it would be an argument for Lithuania to be accepted into NATO as soon as possible. And so it happened - in 2004 Lithuania became a member of this organisation.”
SOT, Algirdas Paleckis, political analyst (Russian): “There were several people here in 2005-2006. So far, only one has been proven to be a prisoner, but most likely there were more. This one is the Palestinian Abu Zubaydah. Most recently, a couple of years ago, he won the European Court of Human Rights and the Lithuanian government a couple of days ago was now forced to pay this Palestinian 100,000 euros in fines. Although, when you think, what he has undergone here is an absolutely meager amount. Why? Because here, in this building, the European Court of Human Rights proved that this Palestinian got cruel treatment, there were tortures.”
SOT, Algirdas Paleckis, political analyst (Russian): “The torture was the most sophisticated, not physical, but psychological. According to the US Senate itself, CIA officers carried out here a breakdown of the human psyche. They wanted him to allegedly split and give out some secret terrorist data.”
SOT, Algirdas Paleckis, political analyst (Russian): “Many in Lithuania, especially the opposition forces, believe that we should get the US authorities to indicate their specific agents who were in contact with specific Lithuanian agents who staged this bacchanalia here with the torturing of people.”
