Lithuania: Pres Nauseda comments on surge of migrant arrivals from Belarus

President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda spoke from Vilnius about the recent Security Council meeting amid surge of migrants from Belarus on Wednesday.

He listed the steps the county is going to take on the crisis: “border control and border protection. We admit that in this place we will not be able to do in one month what we have not done over the past 10 years. Now we can only regret not taking care good of our border over the past 10 years, although it was clear next to which state we live,” Nauseda said.

“We must make a very focused and serious effort in communicating with the states of origin of emigrants and transit countries. In this case first of all I am talking about Iraq and Turkey,” he added.

The Lithuanian leader also said he discussed the topic with “the European Commission, the President of the Council of Europe during his recent visit to Lithuania, as well as the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.”

“It was about these comprehensive measures and their coordination that we spoke at the last meeting of the Security Council, and as you know even earlier, in June, we identified the scale of the problem and agreed that we need to act immediately,” Nauseda continued.

On July 2 Lithuania declared a state of emergency because of the migrant arrivals from Belarus. Vilnius started building a fence along the eastern border which will cost €41 mil ($48 mil), authorities say.

The 2020 political crisis in Belarus erupted after current leader Aleksander Lukashenko was elected for his sixth term. Vilnius has granted refuge for Belarus opposition figures. Tensions rose after Minsk forced Ryanair passenger jet headed to Lithuania to land in Belarus.

Last week, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei accused Minsk of attempting to shift money due to be paid to provide border security to “projects inside the country.”
