LIVE: AMLO takes part in military parade in celebration of Mexican Independence

Mexico celebrates the 211th anniversary of Mexican Independence with a military parade at the Zocalo in Mexico City on Thursday, September 16. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is expected to take part and deliver a speech.

The parade in the Zocalo is the largest among several taking place simultaneously throughout the country and is due to be attended by members of the cabinet of Mexico, the Congress of the Union, and civil services employees, among others.

The process for Mexican Independence started on September 16, 1810, after Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell and gave the call to arms, triggering the Mexican War of Independence that lasted until September 27, 1821 and culminated in Mexican Independence from Spain.
