LIVE: Archbishop Marx delivers statement after report released on sexual abuse in Germany’s diocese

German Cardinal and Archbishop of Munich and Freising Church Reinhard Marx is delivering a press statement on Thursday, January 20 after a report on sexual abuse in Germany’s Munich Diocese was released.

The report incriminates retired Pope Benedict XVI, with lawyers accusing him of misconduct in four cases during his tenure as Munich archbishop in the 1970s and 1980s.

In June 2021, Cardinal Marx offered his resignation to Pope Francis saying in a letter that he wanted to take responsibility “for the catastrophe of sexual abuse” by church members. The Pope rejected the offer but said a process of reform was necessary.
