Ruptly is live from Leverkusen after a severe explosion occurred at an industrial complex for chemical companies in the city on the morning of Tuesday, July 27.

The blast shook the entire city area and left a black cloud of smoke visible in the sky above. An alarm was triggered across the city and residents are being instructed to stay inside and keep windows and doors closed.

The motorway junction Leverkusen-West and the A1 between the motorway junction Leverkusen and Cologne-Nord are affected by the full closure.

According to the city of Leverkusen, one person has died, while 16 others were injured, four of them seriously. Four people remain missing.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.
