LIVE: NASA holds briefing on Asteroid Redirection Test mission

NASA representatives are holding a virtual press briefing on Thursday, November 4, on the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the agency’s first planetary defence test mission.

The mission intends to help assess if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to help it change its course, in case an Earth-threatening asteroid is discovered in the future.

Planetary defence officer, Lindley Johnson, DART mission system engineer Elena Adams, DART coordination lead Nancy Chabot and DART investigation team lead Andy Cheng are taking part in the virtual event.

DART is scheduled to launch no earlier than Wednesday, November 24 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Mandatory Credit: NASA TV
