LIVE: Protest outside Italian consulate in Barcelona after Puigdemont detained in Sardinia

Dozens of pro-Catalan independence protesters are gathering outside the Italian consulate in Barcelona on Friday to demand the release of the former President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont following his detention in Italy. The diplomatic headquarters has been surrounded by law enforcement since the previous evening.

Puigdemont was detained in Sardinia on Thursday and is due to appear in court on Friday for an extradition hearing over charges of sedition.

The arrest was carried out under a Spanish international warrant on charges related to a 2017 independence referendum. Puigdemont was reportedly due to attend a folk festival on Friday and meet with pro-Catalan independence mayors and councilors of Sardinia.
