The United Nations is set to convene an international conference on providing aid to Afghanistan in Geneva on Monday, September 13.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation in the country as a ‘looming humanitarian catastrophe’ and called for an increase in humanitarian funding, also appealing for full and unimpeded humanitarian access in Afghanistan.

Several aid agencies have been warning of the imminent danger of famine and extreme living conditions in the country due to a drought that occurred earlier this year, killing significant proportions of wheat crops. In addition, the Taliban’s seizure of power in August has left the country isolated and its economy crumbling.
