The UN Security Council convenes in New York City on Tuesday, December 14, to discuss non-proliferation and the Iran nuclear issue.

The Iran nuclear situation has long been regulated by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), concluded in 2015 by China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK, the US, the EU and Iran.

The deal, however, has not been working well for a number of years, with former US president Donald Trump having withdrawn from it in 2018 and Iran responding with a build-up of its nuclear programme.
