Only about 42 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballots in this year’s Macal Legislative election, leading to a historic low. The numbers were confirmed by Electoral affairs committee chairman Tong Hio Fong on Monday in Macao.
The turnout was even lower than the Macao Legco election in 2001, when 52.3% qualified citizens turned out for their very first time after the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region in 1999.
“The voting rate is influenced by various factors. The Committee would attribute the low turnout to the COVID-19 pandemic. Quite some Macao residents living in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China are not willing or not able to return to Macao because of the mandatory quarantine measures in town. In addition, the extremely hot weather and the thunderstorm in the afternoon may also affect voters’ desire to vote,” explained Tong Hio Fong.
A total of 137,279 voters out of 323,907 eligible residents elected 14 legislators in an indirect election for the upcoming four years of the Macao Legco. While seven lawmakers are returning to the Legislative Assembly, there are seven new faces on the list.
