Several Bamako residents shared their reactions to the sanctions and economic embargo imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Mali on Tuesday.
The move comes in response to Malian military leaders’ desire to postpone elections until 2025.
On Tuesday, activities seemed to continue as usual in Bamako, as seen in its trafficked streets.
“I have a weighted opinion on these sanctions on behalf of the ECOWAS, because I think that indeed these sanctions are severe, but they were provoked by the utopic timeline presented by the Malian government,” said a resident of Bamako.
ECOWAS also stopped financial aid to Mali and limited the country’s assets to the Central African Republic Bank.
Mali’s military-dominated government has criticised the sanctions and decided to close its land borders with the countries of the group.
SOT, Bamako resident (French): “Regarding the sanction, this is unfortunate as we could have avoided them. Still, I think there is still room to move, as [what is not said] is that, are we really intending to head politically towards that direction, for which we are not ready today?”
SOT, Bamako resident (French): “It will have a major negative impact on the [middle classes].”
SOT, Bamako resident (French): “These sanctions were expected, because their are enshrined in the conventions and legal instruments of the ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] concerning the countries where unconstitutional changes take place. Hence, it was likely that the ECOWAS took this sanction against the Transition, which had said that the bases of the proposed re-foundation would take five years, which is something unrealistic.”
SOT, Bamako resident (French): “I have a weighted opinion on these sanctions on behalf of the ECOWAS, because I think that indeed these sanctions are severe, but they were provoked by the utopic timeline presented by the Malian government.
