Mali: State funeral held for ex-Pres Keita in Bamako

Mali held a state ceremony for the late ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in Bamako on Friday. Malians paid a last tribute to Keita, who was overthrown by a military coup on August 20, 2020.

His family, friends, diplomats, former heads of state attended the funeral ceremony to bid farewell to Keita.

“I remember my president as a sincere democrat. I remember my president as a republican. I retain from my president the one who has always worked for peace and reconciliation, the one who loved Mali and the Malians,” said Amadou Koita, former minister of youth under Keita.

Mali’s former President Keita died at the age of 76 on Sunday, January 16.

The children he left behind and who are in the process of governing today want the construction of the country.”

SOT, Blaise Sangare, Former advisor to Keita (French): “So over five years I saw him on trial and understood that he wasn’t there by chance. He held this charter to heart, he had so much love for the country and this trained me, gave me ideas and this allowed me to understand that this country (Mali) should be grateful to him.”
