Meet Laurita, the Chilean dog who goes shopping for her own food

A dog has gone viral after word spread of her ability to go out and buy her own food from local pet stores, in the Cabildo commune of the Valparaiso Region in Chile.

Laurita, the dog, was seen waiting her turn to be attended while out on a food-run on Friday. She then received her food which was placed into her mouth by the owner of the premises, before making her way back home.

Cristian Zaldivar, owner of a Cabildo pet store which the dog frequents, said he saw Laurita as a customer just like any other. “Several anecdotes have passed with her because when she entered here and came out with the bag, many times people thought that she was a dog that is stealing food, like a Mechera [name for commercial thieves in Chile] but it is not like that, it is like one more client of ours,” he said.

Laurita has reportedly gone out shopping for herself for the past 10 years now.

SOT, Cristian Zaldivar, Owner of pet store (Spanish): “Mrs. Lola (the dog owner) who lives a couple of metres away began to arrive with her and bought her food and put it in her mouth and they left, as time passed the dog got used to it and began to come to the place alone, she looked at my wife with her little face and she asked her if she was hungry and basically she answered yes, so my wife prepared her small food in her bag and gave it to her so that she would come back.”

SOT, Lorena Vera, Owner of Laurita (Spanish): “She is very well known here on the block, in the municipality because formerly she had an owner who worked there, she passed to the police station, to commercial premises. Because she is also very pretty.”
