Mexico will send two ships with humanitarian aid to Cuba, the country’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced on Monday from Veracruz, during his morning press conference.

“From here, from the heroic Veracruz, which has such a historic relationship with Havana and Cuba, two ships of the Mexican Navy are going to leave with oxygen, food and medicine”, stated AMLO.

The president emphasised that his country had taken “the decision to help, to show solidarity in the face of this blockade (by the US against Cuba).”

“Now that there is a difficult health situation in Cuba, instead of blocking, we should all help. It is not conceivable that in these times they want to punish an independent country with a blockade,” declared President Lopez Obrador.

The president made an international appeal for help for the Cuban people.

“I would like to take this opportunity to call on all the countries of the world to turn the demonstration expressed at the UN by voting against the blockade into action and to help the people of Cuba.

Lopez Obrador also urged US President Joe Biden to “make a decision” regarding the blockade.

“I think that President Biden should make a decision on the matter. It is a respectful call, from a non-interfering point of view, but we have to separate the political from the humanitarian. Life is the most important thing, it is the most important of human rights: the right to life”, said the Mexican President.

The aid that Mexico will send will be added to the 88 tonnes of aid that has already arrived on the Caribbean island from Russia, including food, personal protective equipment and more than a million masks.
