Delegates from the US and Mexican governments discussed a new bilateral security cooperation agreement at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Mexico City on Friday.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrad began by addressing the new security and cooperation partnership between the two nations, laying out the foundations of the agreement on security, health and community development.

After 13 years of the Merida Initiative, Joe Biden’s Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, said that “it is time for a new approach to cooperation” between the two countries.

The new security agreement aims to tackle the increase in illegal immigration and organised crime. The plan replaces the Merida Initiative, which began operating in 2007 and provided military equipment to Mexican forces and later helped train their security forces.

The new agreement will focus on information sharing and stopping the flow of US-made weapons into Mexico.
