With winds of more than 185 kilometres per hour, Hurricane Rick made landfall on the Mexican coasts of Guerrero and Michoacan on Monday, as seen in footage filmed in the city of Lazaro Cardenas in the early hours of Monday morning.

In the city, the wind uprooted hundreds of trees with signs, tin roofs, and even traffic lights seen blown down.

A preliminary report from the civil protection authorities indicated that there were no casualties in this region following the hurricane, with power services working on restoring the energy supply.

The centre of Hurricane Rick, a category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is near the municipality of Arteaga, Michoacan, in southwestern Mexico, where it is causing heavy rains and high waves along the coast, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

SOT, Juan Carlos Hurtado, Clean-up worker (Spanish): “I’ve never been hit by one before, it’s the first time I’ve seen a hurricane like this, they always go out to sea and now it hit here in the city.”
