Mexico: Voters go to polls in referendum on investigating ex-presidents

Voters in Mexico City took to the polls on Sunday to vote in a referendum promoted by current president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, known commonly as AMLO, that would allow his predecessors to be held accountable for corruption.

Johan, a first time voter, stated, “this is the first time that I have come to vote and have the power to choose whether or not justice is done.”

Maria another voted expressed her dissatisfaction with past presidents, “there have been many presidents who have stolen from us and nothing happened.”

The referendum is seen by many critics of AMLO as a political stunt to reinvigorate his voter base and is expected to have low voter turnout.

At least 37.4 million Mexican voters, 40 percent of the voting populace, must turn out for the referendum to be binding.

SOT, Johan, Voter (Spanish): “This for me the truth influences too much, as a young man and not only for me but also for my family, my sister and my grandparents, that they have a better future. Although I have not experienced what they have, there is a better country for me, that has power, voice and vote, This is the first time that I have come to vote and have the power to choose whether or not justice is done. It is fair and necessary.”

SOT, Ignacio, Voter (Spanish): “The importance of this vote is to empower citizens and that the number of robberies, grievances, and offences that former presidents and other officials have done to the people of Mexico do not go unpunished.”

SOT, Ignacio, Voter (Spanish): “It is enough that we are a good number, millions of citizens saying we do know, we do not forgive, we want justice.”

SOT, Maria, Voter (Spanish): “I am here in the voting booth because this interests me, and the truth is that it seemed very good that our opinion will be taken into account.”

SOT, Maria, Voter (Spanish): “There have been many presidents who have stolen from us and nothing happened. I really think that this is good, and I hope my fellow citizens come because it is good to come to vote and express our feelings. It is demonstrated here.”
