Middle East's largest aquarium opens in Abu Dhabi

The largest aquarium in the Middle East opened its doors on Friday in Al Qana district, Abu Dhabi, as seen on Saturday.

Covering 9,000 square metres and holding some 46,000 creatures, the National Aquarium will allow visitors to immerse themselves into the water worlds of the Middle East and beyond.

“I came here with my aunt. I love the experience. I saw many types of fish, like glow-in-the-dark fish, jellyfish, sharks, etc. I had lots of fun. I recommend [it] to my friends and teachers coming here”, said a visitor.

The aquarium was built in collaboration with the Environment Agency, and marks the first project to open in the capital’s new Al Qana waterfront destination.

It is hoped that its visitors will be inspired to preserve and protect of the world seas.

SOT, Visitor (Arabic): “Today, I came with my family for the first time to experience the largest aquarium in the Emirates. We visited various sections and were pleased to see different types of fish and get to know some of them for the first time. It was a nice experience.”

SOT, Visitor: “This is today the second day for the National Aquarium. I came with my family, my wife and my kids. They had so [much] fun. They would like to see the shark section, because the shark is very big. So they are excited to see that one.”
