Millions of Locusts Sweep into Delhi Outskirts

Millions of locusts have reached the outskirts of India’s capital New Delhi after destroying crops in the country’s heartland.

The locust plagues originated in the Horn of Africa, and due to high wind speeds spread across Saudi Arabia and Kuwait before arriving in India.

If uncontrolled, the insects can seriously threaten food security and lead to famines.

The swarms have brought devastation as India is already struggling to contain one of the world’s worst coronavirus outbreaks, with millions of people pushed into poverty after losing their livelihoods due to the stringent lockdown rules.
