The Russian Athletics Federation (RusAF) has made ‘good progress’ in the ‘right direction’ to rejoin international competitions, but the ban was upheld during the 53rd World Athletics Congress, the president of the sport’s governing said at a press conference in Monaco on Thursday.
“The resolution was passed, and the Russian Federation continues to be suspended while the Council oversees the completion of the Russian reinstatement plan. And it has been good progress made under the new management at the Russian Athletics Federation which we want to see continue and we are pleased we can move forward with RusAF under the same conditions,” Sebastian Coe said after the conclusion of the congress.
“I am optimistic we are moving in the right direction. But it’s very clear to me [the reinstatement decision] will be when Taskforce provides Council with the confidence of really understanding that the reinstatement plan has been properly implemented, and Recognition of RUSADA (Russian Anti-Doping Agency) as a properly functioning entity is part of that reinstatement plan,” he added.
126 national federations voted for the extension of the doping ban, with 18 against and 34 abstentions.
The congress also approved the ‘world plan’ of 2020 to 2030 which builds the four-year strategic plan and the four pillars of “more participation, more people, more fans, and more partners” aimed to accelerate the growth of the sport.
