The rare, viral infection, monkeypox, is baffling scientists as cases are reported across Europe and the US.

The virus had previously only been seen in its numerous outbreaks in central and West Africa.

But Britain, Spain, Italy, Peru, Australia and others have now reported multiple cases of the smallpox-related disease, mostly in young men who had not travelled to Africa prior to infection.
