The laziest of all wannabe Olympians met in Brezna on Thursday for the 10th annual ‘Lazy Olympics.

The competition consists of participants competing, in the loosest sense of the word, to see who can lie down and rest the most. The competitor who manages to do so wins the first prize of €300 ($350).

“The competition is interesting, this is also a psychological competition, it is not as easy as it seems. Many of the competitors who won last year were marathon runners, they ran a marathon and they said that it was harder to lie down than to run the marathon they ran,” stated competition organiser Milos Blagojevic.

The field of attendees is slightly smaller than what is normally expected at Montenegro’s lazy Olympics this year due to coronavirus restrictions.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Nikola, Participant (Montenegrin): “I signed up to see what all this looks like, I like to lay around at home. I don’t expect to win, but I came to compete, to have a new experience. I love everything new, new adventures, some new things. The prizes are good, the first prize is good, if used properly, I came to try and hang out, so we’ll see in the end.”

SOT, Jelena, Participant (Montenegrin): “This is my first time participating. I came to see what it’s about and to hang out. It’s beautiful here, it’s beautiful nature. When we start doing something, we expect the best result, now we will see if there will be misery. If there will be no victory, it doesn’t really matter, it is nice for us to socialise and enjoy nature. That is what interests me.”

SOT, Milos Blagojevic, Lazy Olympics organiser: “This year is the tenth anniversary of the laying down competition. We came up with the idea ten years ago, that there is a myth about Montenegrins being lazy people, and there are a lot of jokes about how Montenegrins are lazy, so we decided to make it into a competition. At first we thought it would be less interesting but it turned out that we received huge media attention, it even attracted the attention of the whole world, we became recognisable by it. We did a lot more humane things but this turned out to be one of the most interesting competitions in the world. The competition is interesting, this is also a psychological competition, it is not as easy as it seems. Many of the competitors who won last year were marathon runners, they ran a marathon and they said that it was harder to lie down than to run the marathon they ran.”

SOT, Milos Blagojevic, Lazy Olympics organiser: “This year we introduced a novelty, it was previously not allowed to go to the toilet, the competitors lasted 52 hours laying down continuously. This year, we allowed going them to go the toilet every 8 hours, so that the competition attracted enough people. It is important that the competitor lasts as long as possible laying down. The one who can last the longest will be the winner. The first prize is 300 Euros ($350), but the competitors came more to meet and socialise, we also have prizes for other competitors.”
