Dozens of protesters blocked roads forming barricades with cars, tires, bins, and stones to prevent church and state dignitaries from reaching the inauguration of the new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, taking place in a monastery in Cetinje on Sunday.
The town of Cetinje holds the headquarters of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC). Yet, it is also a symbol of sovereignty for some Montenegrins, who felt the choice of venue for the ceremony was an insult to the country’s historical struggle for independence.
Bishop Joanikije, the new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro, arrived at the ceremony by helicopter.
Heavy police were deployed in the small town.
According to local sources, officers used tear gas to disperse protesters as tensions arose.
