Short but intense rain and thunderstorms overnight Monday and Tuesday flooded main streets around Athens and Thessaloniki and uprooted trees in northern Greece

In the north of Greece and in nearby villages, flooding in the basements of houses led to the fact that additional firefighters from the regions were called to help - 50 firefighters with 20 trucks.
In total, water was pumped out of 45 houses, basements and office premises. The farming village received 77mm of rain in almost an hour and flooded agricultural fields, irrigation canals and overflowing drainage channels were reported.
Further south, some mountain villages were without electricity, and in Kalabaka firefighters were pumping water out of flooded basements.
In Athens, flooding temporarily closed Piraeus Street in both directions before police ordered it to reopen. However, flooding problems were reported on Coastal Avenue heading towards Voula and Vouliagmenis Avenue also heading towards Voula as police closed sections of the main highways.
