Terrible floods hit Iran!
At least seven people have died in floods near Tehran, emergency services said, most of them in a landslide that threw four meters of mud onto a village west of the capital.
The flash flood near Tehran, in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains, came less than a week after floods in Iran’s usually dry south killed 22 people.
It is also reported that six people died in the village, nine were injured, and 14 were missing.
More than 500 people have been evacuated, according to official figures.
To the east of the capital, in Demavand, a body was recovered from the flood waters, according to the state news agency.
The head of the Iranian Red Crescent, Pir Hossein Kolivand, told state television that heavy rains caused floods and landslides in Imamzad Daud, a tourist center near Tehran and that several cars were stuck in the mud or were swept away.
The floods in 18 Iranian provinces, including Isfahan, Yazd, and Fars, have killed 22 people, Kolivand said.
The search for survivors continues, he said.
President Ebrahim Raisi ordered Tehran’s governor to take steps to prevent further incidents and warn residents of the dangers, his office said in a statement.
In 2019, heavy rains in southern Iran killed at least 76 people and caused more than $2 billion in damage.
Scientists say climate change is exacerbating extreme weather events, including droughts, and the likelihood of increased rainfall intensity.
Like other nearby countries, Iran has been suffering from chronic dry spells and heatwaves for years, and these are expected to worsen.
