After days of volcanic activity, Mount Etna has erupted in spectacular fashion, showering the night sky above Sicily with glowing rock and boiling ash.

The lava flowed into a nearby uninhabited valley, but ash blew from the summit over nearby towns on the Italian island.

However, the local population was unharmed, with minor eruptions a common occurrence at Mount Etna - the largest of Italy’s three active volcanoes.
