More than 5,000 families and 300,000 hectares were affected by the floods in Argentina’s northern coastal zone. The provinces of Chaco, Corrientes and Santa Fe were hardest hit by a week of heavy and continuous rains, while the provinces of Formosa and Misiones also reported problems. Four people died in the region: three in Paso de los Libres in the province of Corrientes and one in the province of Santiago del Estero, where a boy was hit by a fallen branch. Several cities are completely cut off. Over the past 11 days, 400 millimeters of rain has fallen in the northeast of the province of Santa Fe. El Nocero, Santa Margherita and Villa Minetti were among the hardest hit cities. The city of Los Amores in Santa Fe received 740 millimeters of rain in a week, equivalent to the average annual rainfall. Local authorities warn that if current conditions continue to affect the area, up to 1,500 people will be forced to evacuate. Santa Fe Provincial Water Minister Juan Carlos Bertoni called the situation in his province “increasingly difficult.” In the next six days, we expect precipitation of 200 millimeters. We will see a significant rise in water levels,” he said. In the province of Corrientes, 2,500 people were evacuated, while authorities in the province of Santiago del Estero said 800 families were affected by the flood. Chaco provincial authorities said up to 4,500 families were directly affected by the floods, 500 of whom were evacuated to six community centers and schools. The Chaco capital, Resistencia, reported 465 millimeters of rain, the highest recorded rainfall in 64 years. The province has declared a state of emergency. Governor Jorge Capitanić urged President Mauricio Macri via Twitter to ensure “maximum energy, speed and priority” in the implementation of public works projects in his province, which he considers “necessary to mitigate the effects of flooding in the entire Resistencia metropolitan area.”
