Large-scale flooding has led to dire consequences in Sri Lanka, where more than 450000 people have been affected due to the worsening flood situation. The flooding situation has worsened in the eastern province, where authorities say more than 400000 people have now been affected in 1089 villages in 26 districts. River levels are at an all-time high.
Heavy rains, floods and landslides have also affected other parts of the region.
Heavy rains, floods and landslides hit the eastern province. The province’s Office of Disaster Management reported 24,681 people affected by the floods in 94 villages. The most severe flood occurred in the Kachar region, where the Barak River overflowed its banks.
Since then, flooding has continued or intensified in parts of the state, affecting 403000 people, including 96,697 people in Kachar, 88,420 people in Khodjai, 58000 people in Nagaon and 56000 people in Darrang. More than 170 relief camps have been established, hosting 39000 displaced persons as of today, including 31000 in Khojai and 7000 in Kachar.
The Central Water Commission said the Kopili River at Kampura in Nagaon has reached its highest level of 62 meters, well above the dangerous mark of 60 meters and higher than the previous record of 61 meters set in July 2004.
Sri Lanka’s National Disaster Response Force said landslides triggered by incessant rains have left three family members missing. Other landslides in the area caused damage to houses. Two workers are missing after a landslide covered part of a road near Itanagar.
Local media reported that heavy rain caused flooding and destruction in parts of the state of Meghalaya. One person went missing in a landslide in the village of Jonksha in Mokinryu District.
