High rainfall that has hit Piriapolis since 2:00 pm on Tuesday has caused flooding that has reached homes and businesses at the resort. Although the exact number of affected families is not known, according to Mayor Rene Granja, who reported to the adviser of the Broad Front, Federico Casas, there were no casualties. At about 4:30 pm, the water level returned to normal and the evacuation of people stopped, Casas added. In a dialogue with the newspaper, the adviser pointed out that it is not yet possible to quantify the material damage, but several parked cars collided with each other. The flooding was due to the amount of water flowing out of the city’s rainwater reservoir, and not due to clogged pipes, said a councilor who is one of the victims. For this reason, he raised the issue of the need to resolve this issue before the mayor. In late September, the former mayor of Piriapolis, Mario Invernizzi, warned of the resort’s difficulties in draining rainwater, in part due to underground accumulation of water from the groundwater table. According to Invernizzi, massive buildings in the city provide waterproofing of the territory. In turn, deforestation is reducing the soil’s ability to absorb and divert water, he said. The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology has issued an orange warning of severe storms for the country’s southeastern departments, which began at 12:40 pm. From 4:40 pm, the yellow alert applies to heavy storms and incessant winds. The director of the Ministry of Social Development in Maldonado, Magdalena Sumaran, told the newspaper that due to the meteorological warning, the temporary shelter in the city of Maldonado will remain open to people living on the street.
