Designer Pamela Kleeman-Passi presented her Mo-Hair Suit, the world’s first suit made out of moustache hair, created in collaboration with Politix, to raise awareness of men’s health, as seen in Melbourne on Friday.
According to Kleemann-Passi, the so-called Mo-Hair suite consisted of collected men’s beards from various barbershops around Australia. Her personal creative motivation was to use a project to highlight often hidden issues, such as suicide, testicular cancer and prostate cancer, a cancer her recently deceased husband succumbed to.
The suit was unveiled as part of Movember, an annual event encouraging men to grow out their facial hair during the month of November to raise awareness around men’s health issues.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “This idea was dreamed up by Politix Meanswear, partnering with Movember to raise awareness for men’s health, in particular suicide prevention and testicular and prostate cancer.”
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “My inspiration for being involved in this project is very much connected with the story of my late husband, who passed away in 2016 from colorectal and prostate cancer.”
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “The other surprise is, within the suit - and it s about conversations and as a conversations starts, it comes from within the body.”
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “Look, sustainable sellers collected the hair from men around Australian barbershops. This woman access of a hundred men who have contributed very conscious to this project - Once would spread particularly around Melbourne with all of the team involved in the whole process. I would start to get little envelopes and packages of hair plopping through my letterbox.”
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “It was a bit like cooking for me. It feels like what I made is a hair sandwich. Because I had a backing fabric and then the hair is thickly layered on top of backing fabric and a layer of very fine wool on the top of that to contain the hair. Then, it was stitched with a blind hemming stitch, which has this sort of peaks and crafts like a readout from a hat.”
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “But you know this is duality when hair is on the body it is seen as acceptable and beautiful and all of those positive things. When it is off the body it is disgusting and repulsive and you do not want any food. It definitely has this polarity, but it is an intriguing pace to ask people talking.”
SOT, Pamela Kleeman-Passi, Artist: “The message is loud and clear, want to be heard and keep talking.”
