Protesters in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, stormed the parliament and other government buildings after the prime minister signed a peace deal to end the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which sees the country not only losing recent territorial gains outside the region but also some areas within.
Brokered by Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a peace agreement on Tuesday.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian said on Facebook that the decision was “extremely painful for me personally and for our people.”
The deal is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and prompted celebrations in Baku.
Under the agreement, Azerbaijan will hold on to areas of Nagorno-Karabakh that it has taken during the conflict, while Armenia agreed to turn over the recent territorial gains it made outside the region.
The Armenian leader in Nagorno-Karabakh said a ceasefire had been unavoidable after the loss of Karabakh’s second-biggest town, Shusha (or Shushi). He said if the conflict had continued, the whole of Karabakh would have been lost.
About 2,000 Russian peacekeepers have been deployed to protect some areas and especially the so-called Lachin Corridor, which is the main road that links Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.
