‘NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover Sends Back First Images From Red Planet’

A one-tonne spacecraft has become the second NASA rover to touch down on Mars after a perilous six-month journey through space.

In the first pictures transmitted from its landing site in the Jezero crater, the rover - named Perseverance - appeared to be in “great shape” and will now begin its mission, collecting rock samples to be analysed for signs of ancient microscopic life.

The crater, thought to have held a giant lake billions of years ago, could provide key evidence of extra-terrestrial life.

Mars has long been a death trap for incoming craft, though Perseverance managed to hurtle through the Red Planet’s thin atmosphere and land safely on the Martian surface.
