Neglected bat lived in broom closet for years before rescue

Chessie was born in a zoo in 1997. Over time, she wound up at a facility in Michigan where she was on display for the public. She lived in a wire cage and began to lose her sight. To make things worse, she was then moved into a small crate and kept in a broom closet because the facility had obtained many other animals and ran out of space. Chessie languished there for years until that facility closed in 2018.

That’s when Chessie was rescued by Bat World Sanctuary. Within weeks, she gained much-needed weight. She is safe now and she will never be alone again. She can be seen spending time with other elderly friends and gets to enjoy all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables.
