The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorised a second antiviral pill from Merck & Co to treat COVID-19 on Thursday, a day after giving Pfizer the green light with their Paxlovid treatment. The pills were seen being packed for shipping in Haarlem, Netherlands, Thursday.
The medication, Molnupiravir, is made by Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, adding another at-home treatment option to help keep people away from hospitals.
The FDA has not authorised the use in patients younger than 18 due to bone and cartilage growth interference.
Merck has an agreement with the US government to supply around 3.1 courses of treatment within days of authorisation. Ten million courses have reportedly been packaged and are ready to be distributed.
