Prosecutors started to explain their indictment in their closing arguments to the judges in the murder trial concerning the victims of the MH17 disaster in The Hague on Monday.
The closing argument and explanation of the evidence are scheduled to take over about three days in the trial of the Malaysia Airlines plane that was shot down over east Ukraine on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in 2014. The incident led to the death of the crew and all 298 passengers.
“Today we are here to do right by the 298 victims of flight MH17. Your court will need to determine how on 17 July 2014, MH17 was shot down and whether the accused, (Igor) Girkin, (Sergey) Dubinskiy, (Oleg) Pulatov, (Leonid) Kharchenko are culpable or not,” said public prosecutor Thijs Berger at the beginning of the hearing.
“Determining the truth in this case may also contribute to averting new violence in the future,” Berger continued his statement regarding the three Russians and Ukrainian accused of being behind the disaster.
“After all, a world that makes no effort to ascertain the truth and to punish the guilty when hundreds of innocent civilians are murdered is leaving its civilians as fair game,” he added.
The trial that started in March 2020 following years of investigations, takes place against the background of emerging border tensions between Russia and Ukraine over the allegations of Moscow placing troops at the joint border.
