Netherlands: Residents of The Hague react to tightened partial lockdown

Residents of The Hague shared their reactions to the latest set of updated COVID-19 restrictions on Sunday.
The country has tightened up a set of restrictions implemented earlier this month, forcing restaurants, entertainment venues, sports centres and non-essential shops to close at 5 pm local time.
“l am very fed up with it. It’s been a long time. It would be nice to go back to normal, but I also understand that something needs to be done,” said David, a resident.
As part of the restrictions, a limit on the number of guests has been placed for private home gatherings, allowing for up to four individuals over the age of 13 to meet at a time.
The restrictions come in place at a time of a COVID-19 infection surge in the country and concerns over the possible spread of the new Omicron variant, which has been designated as a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO).

SOT, David, Resident: “I mean I’m happy it’s not a full lockdown, I’ll tell you that, so I’m happy we still have some… I’m sort of two minds about it, at this point. l am very fed up with it. It’s been a long time. It would be nice to go back to normal, but I also understand that something needs to be done but it seems a little odd when we do realise that a lot of the infections take place at home and not in a shop or in a bar. I think that’s kind of where I land on it so it’s little bit of this little, bit of that.”

SOT, Resident: “If you don’t want to die old then we have to do that. Have a serious lockdown, rules, we have to follow them. If we don’t, we have bigger problems”.

SOT, Resident: “I don’t know if they (the restrictions) are proportional per se, but something has to be done, I feel like. The fact that they haven’t invested any more into the hospitals is a bit shady but I had some discussions with some friends, and they were like: ‘Yeah but it’s really hard to train doctors to be intensive care personnel.’ So maybe we could have done something about that and in the meantime, we’ll see if they’re effective”.
