Residents and visitors in The Hague voiced their opinions towards the newly-enforced national COVID-19 restrictions, amid a rise in cases, on Saturday.

Customers were seen being turned away from shops as employees closed up business in line with the new rules, with restaurant terraces appearing empty.

“I guess that measures [should] be taken when the situation is under control, not when the situation is out of control,” said one visitor, adding that the government have implemented restrictions too ‘late.’

One local resident expressed happiness at the mandatory mask-wearing requirement, stating that she felt ‘insecure’ when surrounded by those without masks.

“I prefer this for a short amount of time than [to] having another lockdown where we have to all stay home and cut everything [out] of our lives,” she continued.

As of Saturday, mask wearing is now obligatory in indoor spaces. In addition, non-essential businesses are required to close at 18:00, whilst bars and restaurants must shut by 20:00.

On Saturday, the country reported 13,848 new COVID-19 cases.

SOT, The Hague visitor: “I guess that measures [should] be taken when the situation is under control, not when the situation is out of control, so at this point I think it is a little bit late. And lockdown, it’s okay, but I think that you should take more seriously the situation. It’s a very bad situation. The numbers are increasing. The hospitals are like they are, so I think that not only lockdown but masks should be [worn] in many cases. A question of protect yourself and protect others.”

SOT, Visitor: “It was a bad decision for the lockdown, a very bad decision. They shouldn’t [do] that, there were other measures that they [should have done], not a lockdown.”

SOT, Local resident: “I’m really happy about masks, mostly, because I arrived a month ago here in The Hague and having no mask everywhere, I really felt insecure, because in closed spaces it’s really better to keep a mask [on], in my opinion. And about the new rules about restaurants and everything closing at seven, I do not agree that it’s gonna change something drastically to be honest. I feel like maintaining an hour around maybe nine, ten, would have been reasonable but all in all I do agree with some measures. I prefer this for a short amount of time than [to] having another lockdown where we have to all stay home and cut everything [out] of our lives. So yeah, I agree.”
