Thousands of people joined a climate march on Saturday in Amsterdam as part of the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice.
The protest was organised by dozens of environmental organisations and was held in the same week as the COP26 summit on climate change in Scotland.
“The deals that have been made aren’t binding enough, not enough countries have signed them and there just haven’t been enough deals made and they are not strong enough,” said Joshua Paans, a member of the Dutch branch of the Fridays for Future movement.
“It’s always good to have some form of agreement but it’s quite disappointing,” added Paans.
The protest was organised by Fridays For Future in The Netherlands, Greenpeace, Extinction Rebellion, and Oxfam Novib, among other organisations.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Joshua Paans, Dutch Fridays for Future : “Every step taken is a step taken. However, it is far from good enough. The deals that have been made aren’t binding enough, not enough countries have signed them and there just haven’t been enough deals made and they are not strong enough. It’s always good to have some form of agreement but it’s quite disappointing.”
SOT, Joshua Paans, Dutch Fridays for Future: “They could sign agreements on banning investments in fossil fuels for example. The Dutch government is still investing billions a year in fossil fuels and in the fossil industry. You could increase taxes on various products which have high emissions.”
SOT, Hugo Verkuil, The Vegetarian Butcher Association: “There is actually a big elephant in the room at COP26. A lot has been discussed on how to move forward in sustainability but one thing is not on the agenda and that is animal meat and we think it is a missed opportunity not to talk about animal meat given the fact that it has a huge impact on emissions.”
