Devotees gathered in numbers in Managua on Sunday to celebrate the patron of the city, Saint Dominic, and pray.

During the ceremony, devotees danced, carried flower bouquets and lit candles in front of a church.

“From my heart, I ask for the end of the pandemic first and second for the end of this political situation that Nicaragua is in,” said Carlos Estrada, a devotee who came to attend the ceremony.

The Mayor’s Office of Managua allowed for the popular festival to take place despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, that saw 9,470 people test positive for the virus in the country, according to Johns Hopkins University.

SOT, Francisco Trinidad, Devotee (Spanish): “(My wife) was in a coma when she was 9 years old, they almost gave her up for dead and her mother promised Santo Domingo that if he took care of her every year she would make her promise to dance.”

SOT, Alexander Espinoza, Devotee (Spanish): “May he bring peace to Nicaragua, may he offer the peace that Nicaragua needs to all of us, to all the Nicaraguan people, and may Santo Domingo de Guzman live on.”

SOT, Carlos Estrada, Devotee (Spanish): “From my heart, I ask for the end of the pandemic first and second for the end of this political situation that Nicaragua is in. We are not well but we need that prayer, that love of Santo Domingo so that we get out of these two things that we have here in Nicaragua.”
