Dozens of activists marched in Managua on Wednesday during World AIDS Day in solidarity with people affected by HIV-AIDS, and to celebrate the progress the country has made in the fight against the disease.
Demonstrators held rainbow flags and banners with messages such as ‘protect yourself from AIDS,’ but above all “in moral and social support for people living” with the disease, as one activist commented.
“In relation to Central America we are the country with the least cases, however it has to do with our health model that reaches precisely, extends to the last territory of the country. Today we have 91 comprehensive care clinics, in 2007 there were only four clinics,” commented another demonstrator.
According to the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (Minsa), Nicaragua has registered 852 new cases of HIV/AIDS so far this year, at a rate of at least 3 people infected per day, according to reports.
Last week, the country’s Parliament approved the law for the promotion, protection and defense of Human Rights in the face of HIV and AIDS for its prevention and care.

SOT, demonstrator (Spanish): “We are all human beings first and foremost and this is not a disease that just by touching and talking to each other we are going to get infected, but to always give moral support, social support to people who have HIV”.
SOT, health personnel (Spanish): “In relation to Central America we are the country with the fewest cases, however it has to do with our health model that reaches precisely, extends to the last territory of the country. Today we have 91 comprehensive care clinics, in 2007 there were only four clinics. That says a little of the concern, of the revolution to guarantee life, stability and health to our brothers and sisters who live with HIV-AIDS”.
SOT, activist (Spanish): “It is also important because we cannot let there be people who are being diagnosed and who are not receiving their treatment, so the importance, or within the Ministry of Health or the organizations is to insert people within the care programs for treatment for people living with HIV.”
