Police officers raided the offices of La Prensa in Managua on Friday.

Agents entered the newsroom and cut off electricity and internet access, and some journalists were taken into police custody, according to local sources.

La Prensa is the only national and the main opposition newspaper in Nicaragua.

“The police released a statement indicating that they are conducting a raid and are opening an investigation for customs fraud and money laundering to the detriment of the state of Nicaragua. We are unaware of these accusations,” said Noel Miranda, a journalist, adding that “the police are holding several of our colleagues in custody.”

Nicaraguan authorities issued a statement accusing the media outlet of “money laundering” and “customs fraud,” shortly after the newspaper had to cancel its publication alleging that the paper for printing was being withheld.
