Nigeria: Nnamdi Kanu supporters rally in Abuja as trial of pro-Biafra leader resumes

Dozens of supporters of Nnamdi Kanu, a separatist leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) protested outside the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday as the trial of Kanu resumed.
The protesters could be seen demanding the release of the leader outside the court while calling for the removal of Nigerian President Buhari.
Kanu, who was absent in the hearing, is facing terrorism and treason charges. He left the country for Kenya breaking bail terms in 2017, and was arrested again in 2021.
The Biafran war that started in 1967 and lasted until 1970 saw the defeat of the rising Biafran state and the confirmation of the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

SOT, Kanu supporter: “Our demand is unconditional. (inaudible) Kanu. He committed no offence. There is no cause or any law against in Nigeria that he failed.”

SOT, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lead counsel: “How the court orders have been flouted allegedly by SSS officials and their authority. (inaudible) First of all (inaudible) to be changed to that they actually allow the medical (inaudible) to visit him. And they should comply with the orders of the court and also provide him with good food and allow also persons of his church also to visit him and allow him to practice his faith. Because before now, he hasn’t been allowed to practice his faith.”

SOT, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lead counsel: “So we’re coming back on January 18th for the hearing of the application, challenging the of the court on 18th of January.”

SOT, Alloy Ejimako, Special counsel to Kanu: “We’re not too pleased with the results of the proceedings today. No, we’re not too pleased. we walked away with something, but that’s not really what we wanted. We wanted to move that application, challenging the jurisdiction of the court. That is key to our defence strategy. But that we were not able to move that application today is not pleasing to us.”
