The EU regulation that bans potentially carcinogenic chemicals, which outlaws some coloured tattoo inks, was welcomed by an Italian tattoo artist in Rome on Tuesday, as the law came into force.

Around 4,000 potentially harmful chemicals used in most pigments on the market are now prohibited.

“This regulation establishes that many of the inks used today for tattoos, especially those of colour, will be practically abolished. But, they will be replaced by other types of inks. We have to see this law not as the abolition of some inks, but as greater final protection of the client,” said Alessandro Capozzi, tattoo artist and founder of a studio in Rome.

“I am sure that it will evolve towards a type of inks that are safer for the human body. I always try not to use this type of inks for an ethical question. Because I know it could create some kind of problem for the customer in the future”, said the artist who has tattooed international artists like Demi Lovato.
