‘Novak Djokovic to be Deported Ahead of Australian Open’

Novak Djokovic is to be deported from Australia after losing an appeal over his visa. The ruling came just one day before he was due to begin the defence of his Australian Open title.

Three Federal Court judges upheld a decision to cancel the unvaccinated tennis star’s visa on public health grounds. He now faces a three-year ban on returning to the country, meaning the men’s world No. 1 will be 37 years old when he can next compete in the competition.

In a statement following the decision, Djokovic said he was “extremely disappointed with the ruling” and he would be “taking some time to rest and to recuperate”.

He has also said that he feels “uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love.”

The full reasons behind the court’s unanimous ruling will be published in the “coming days”.
