IOC President Thomas Bach said that the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic games will bring a ‘message of unity and solidarity’ to the world amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, during a visit to the Tokyo 2020 International Broadcast Centre (IBC) on Tuesday.

“The athletes, and I think the whole world, are longing for these games. These games will send a message of unity and solidarity during this ongoing pandemic, and a message of hope to so many people around the world,” said Bach.

Bach stated that the meeting of the 205 national teams, as well as the recently added refugee team, would ‘give hope’ to the world after the Olympics were postponed due to the pandemic.

Bach also touched on the safety measures being taken ahead of the games, including the IOC’s worldwide vaccination programme, which will see that 85 percent of Olympic delegation members and 100 percent of IOC staff are vaccinated before arrival.

The postponed Tokyo Olympic Games begin on July 23 amid a state of emergency in the Japanese capital following a surge COVID-19 cases.
