Over 1,400 dolphins slaughtered in one day as part of traditional hunt

1428 dolphins white-sided dolphins were killed by hunters in Eysturoy, according to the ocean conservation group Sea Shepherd.

The so-called ‘Grindadrap’ is a traditional sea mammal hunt on Faroe Islands that spans back 400 years.

It is non-commercial and authorised, but has long faced opposition from environmental and animal rights groups.

Dolphins were thrashing as they were dragged into shallow waters and cut into.

Sea Shepherd says the animals were ‘driven for many hours and for around 45 km by speed boats and jet-skis into the shallow water’.

Usually up to 1,000 sea mammals are killed during the hunt.

This year’s dolphin death count was exceptionally high, caused an outcry and sparked further debate on the practice.

The Faroe government responded by saying that white-sided dolphin hunts ‘do not have the same cultural legitimacy’ as pilot whale hunts in Faroese society and that authorities would evaluate ‘what part they should play’.
